Puerto Princesa City, Sept. 7, 2012 – All Existing buildings in the city of Puerto Princesa are encouraged to modify in order to meet the standards of a green infrastructure as a way of maximizing the importance of natural environment.
This is in support to the amendments of the national building code where the newly-constructed building should be designed to promote green environment.
Councilor Eleutherius L. Edualino who pushes the measure said that it will also help save energy including expenses with the use of natural wind or sunlight. Likewise, this will also minimize waste disposal.
One of the examples here is the new city hall building. “This is to encourage all the existing buildings to go green in support to the revision of the national building code, “ Edualino said.
The green infrastructure buildings originated in the United States in the mid-90s and highlight the importance of the natural environment in decisions about land-use planning with emphasis on life support as provided by natural ecosystem supporting the long term sustainability.
Edualino admitted however that shifting to green infrastructure would mean another expenses and that is the reason why the city government will give incentives or discounts to those who will adopt the new policy.
This initiative is also supported by the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development including the City Engineering Department and City Planning Office who will formulate the guidelines.
A public hearing will be set to hear the sentiments of the concern agencies to strengthen the measure. (Cheryl A. Galili – The Palawan Times)
