Puerto Princesa City (6 December) -- The City Council of Puerto Princesa recently approved an ordinance creating the Puerto Princesa City Council for Sustainable Development (PPCCSD) which will function as a multi-sectoral and inter-disciplinary body just like the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development of the province.
City Councilor Modesto Rodriguez III, author of the ordinance, said that it is timely and relevant to create a sustainable environmental council for Puerto Princesa in the light of it being a highly-urbanized city.
Essentially, the ordinance hopes that Puerto Princesa, as an HUC, will take charge of its own sustainable environmental concerns through its own council particularly at this time that many investments and businesses are coming in the city.
City Councilor Rodriguez admitted that the implementation of the ordinance will only be in effect as soon as the amendments to the SEP law is accomplished. Presently, the City Mayor of Puerto Princesa sits as a member of the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development.
The Palawan Council for Sustainable Development was created through the Republic Act 7611 also known as the Strategic Environmental Plan for Palawan (SEP), a national law that covers only the province of Palawan. The Council is a multi-sectoral and inter-disciplinary body, which under the law is charged with the governance, implementation and policy direction of the SEP.
