PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan, Jan. 26 (PIA) -- A Roll-on Roll-off (RORO) system between Palawan and Occidental Mindoro is being pushed, thus enhancing the mobility of goods and passengers. This could further boost economic development in the two provinces by accelerating trade and commerce.

The proposal for the establishment of the RORO system is contained in a resolution submitted this week by Provincial Board Member Rolando Bonoan during the regular session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

The resolution recommends to the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) and the Regional Development Council (RDC) of MIMAROPA region the establishment of a RORO system between the two provinces and unifying its local government units to forge a stronger network and come up with a policy on trade and commerce.
Approved in its first reading, Bonoan’s resolution affirms the stand of the province in the study by NEDA and the Regional Development Council particularly in establishment of direct link between San Jose, Occidental Mindoro and Coron, Palawan.

The RORO would spur tourism in Calamianes providing access to its different tourist sites as well as open new opportunities for the micro-small-medium enterprises.

The Philippine Ports Authority is undertaking the Coron Port Expansion Project which includes a structure for a flush-type RORO ramp. Coron, as the major port in northern Palawan and the Calamianes, will be ready for a RORO operation with the completion of the expansion project in a year’s time.
