Officials and researchers from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (DENR-ERDB), led by Forester Simon Medrano, paid a courtesy call on Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron on September 17, 2026, at the City Mayor’s Office.
Also present were Architect Emilyn Kristia P. Nuevas and Forester Kenneth Bryan Doria of the Balayong People’s Park Management.
During the meeting, the DENR-ERDB team presented preliminary findings from its research project, “Urban Parks as Climate Buffers,” which began in December 2025. The study assesses the role of urban parks in carbon storage and urban heat reduction, with Puerto Princesa City and Taguig City selected as study areas.
Balayong People’s Park was selected as a research site for the carbon stock assessment, which aims to determine the amount of carbon stored in its trees and vegetation. Initial findings also highlighted the park’s role in helping reduce temperatures, demonstrating the environmental benefits of urban green spaces.
With data collection completed, the research team is now conducting laboratory analysis of soil samples and further geospatial assessments. The project is expected to be completed by December 2026.
Mayor Bayron welcomed the findings and expressed his support for continued collaboration with DENR-ERDB to guide future urban park development and environmental planning in Puerto Princesa City.
