MAYOR BAYRON WELCOMES LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL DELEGATES AS WTT YOUTH CONTENDER KICKS OFF IN PUERTO PRINCESA

Puerto Princesa City once again takes the global sporting stage as it welcomes young table tennis athletes from around the world for the World Table Tennis (WTT) Youth Contender Puerto Princesa 2026.

Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron warmly welcomed the athletes, coaches, officials, parents, and international delegates during the opening of the tournament, expressing the City Government’s pride in once again hosting an event that brings together some of the most promising young talents in table tennis.

Now on its fourth staging in Puerto Princesa, the WTT Youth Contender continues to strengthen the city’s growing reputation as a trusted host of major international sporting events.

In his message, Mayor Bayron emphasized that hosting the tournament goes beyond competition. It also provides an opportunity to build friendships across borders, showcase Puerto Princesa’s hospitality, and further strengthen the city’s position as an international sports tourism destination.

“For Puerto Princesa, this is more than a sporting competition. It is an opportunity to welcome the world to our city, build friendships across borders, and strengthen our position as an emerging destination for international sports and sports tourism,” Mayor Bayron said.

The Mayor also reminded the young athletes that while winning is an important part of competition, the values they develop through sports are equally important.

“A true champion is not defined only by medals and victories, but also by character, discipline, sportsmanship, and respect for others. These are the values that you will carry with you long after the competition is over,” he added.

Mayor Bayron encouraged the young athletes to give their best throughout the competition while taking the opportunity to make new friends and experience the warmth and hospitality of Puerto Princesa and its people.

The hosting of the tournament further underscores Puerto Princesa’s continuing efforts to establish itself as a premier sports tourism destination, following the city’s recognition as Emerging Destination of the Year at the 7th Philippine Sports Tourism Awards.

This year also marks another milestone for the city as Puerto Princesa hosts not only the WTT Youth Contender but, for the first time, the WTT Feeder Series, further expanding the city’s presence on the international table tennis calendar.

Mayor Bayron also expressed his gratitude to World Table Tennis, the Philippine Table Tennis Federation, organizers, partners, volunteers, and everyone involved in making the tournament possible.

“To all our athletes and delegates, welcome to Puerto Princesa. Compete with your heart, enjoy the experience, and bring home not only memories of the tournament, but also memories of the friendships and hospitality you found in our city,” Mayor Bayron said.

Through the continued hosting of major international sporting events such as the WTT Youth Contender, Puerto Princesa strengthens its presence on the global sports stage while promoting tourism, fostering international friendship, and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
