PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, 07 September (PIA) -- Puerto Princesa City is one of the thirty (30) local government units in the country named as top performers for 2010.

The city garnered high performance scores in the Local Governance Performance Management System (LGPMS) of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG). LGPMS is a web-based self-assessment tool that measures LGU performance in key governance areas and provides information on the status of LGUs in terms of local governance and development.

Specifically, the LGPMS assesses LGU performance on the areas of administrative, social, economic, and environmental governance, and fundamentals of good governance that include transparency, participation and financial accountability.

With one (1) as the lowest and five (5) as the highest, Puerto Princesa City classified under highly-urbanized, independent city category got an overall performance index of 4.8640, the third highest trailing behind Valenzuela (4.9150) and San Juan (4.8875).

On administrative governance, the city is doing excellent performance on the following: customer service, resource allocation and utilization, human resource management and development. Areas for improvement include resource generation and local legislation.

There are also excellent performance on 4 areas under social governance – support to education; peace, security & disaster risk reduction management; health services; and support to housing and basic utilities.

On valuing fundamentals of good governance, the city government scored excellent (5) in the areas of participation and transparency.

City government also received excellent score in forest ecosystem, coastal ecosystem and freshwater eco-system management under environmental governance.

At present, the population of Puerto Princesa City is 210,508 scattered in 253,982 hectares of land in 66 barangays.
