DAVAO PUGS RETAIN CROWN

Four out of five gold medals at stake gave Davao a grand slam claim in the Palaro boxing tournament held at the Baywalk in Puerto Princesa.

Davao’s successful boxing retention campaign was realized through the efforts of powderweight fighter, John Vincent Moralde, who won over Western Visayan John Debert Arcita; Mosquito class contender Mark Anthony Barriga, winner over NCR’s Jerome Sarong; Engelbert Moralde who defeated John Merced of Mimaropa in the paperweight division; and Jerwin Ancaya over Nicko Tayo of Zamboanga.

Only Gerson Nietes of Western Visayas survived the Davao Eagles onslaught by overpowering the lone Region XI losing finalist, Glen Canteveros, in the pinweight division.

So convincing was the win of the brother of world boxing champion Rolando Nietes, a native of Negros Occidental, that he was declared the “Best Boxer” of Palaro 2008.
