Canadian embassy, Palawan State U hold McLuhan media forum

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan, Feb. 2 (PIA) -- The Embassy of Canada and the Palawan State University (PSU) will hold the McLuhan Forum Series on Responsible Media on Feb. 3, 8a.m. at the Performing Arts Center, PSU-Tiniguiban Campus.

Carol Arguillas, Editor-in-Chief of Mindanews and 2011 McLuhan winner, is expected to share her experiences and insights as a journalist in a presentation entitled, “Assertion from the Margins: Culture and Practice of Community Journalism in the Philippines (focus on Mindanao).”

James Christoff, Political Counselor of the Government of Canada will deliver the Opening Remarks with the new PSU President Dr. Jeter S. Sespeñe to welcome the guests and the participants.

The Marshall McLuhan Prize for Investigative Journalism is awarded by the Embassy of Canada every year to a Filipino journalist who has published an outstanding piece of investigative report.

Marshall McLuhan was a Canadian communication theorist. McLuhan's work is viewed as one of the cornerstones of the study of media and journalism theory, as well as having practical applications in the advertising and television industries.

A McLuhan winner is awarded a study tour of Canada during which the journalist gives a lecture at the Faculty of Information of University of Toronto. Upon return to the country, the journalist will do a series of lecture to speak and exchange ideas with their media counterparts and the community media.

Past McLuhan winners include Ramon Magsaysay awardee Sheila Coronel, Ellen Tordesillas of Malaya, Fe Zamora and Gerry Lirio of Philippine Daily Inquirer, Yvonne Chua, Salvacion Espina-Varona, Miriam Grace Go, Tess Bacalla, Vinia Datinguinoo and Armand Nocum.
