PUERTO PRINCESA CITY is a candidate among the selected top highly urbanized cities for best in the 2010 National Literacy Award in the country.

The inclusion of this city came after the 2010 Literacy Coordinating Council (LCC) recognized and was impressed by the literacy programs being implemented by the city government headed by Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn in the previous years. Notably, Puerto Princesa is the only local government unit that has a public Montessori school.

The Board of Judges together with the LCC secretariat coordinators have conducted their ocular visits and on-site validation on the Outstanding Local Government Unit Highly Urbanized City category early this week.

For his part, Hagedorn expressed gratitude that their efforts in literacy programs are being recognized by various groups, including the LCC, saying this will further inspire them to work for the upgrading of the literacy rate in the city.

Norma Salceda, chair of the LCC, said that the selection of the best in literacy programs among the local government units (LGUs) is a yearly undertaking by the LCC to give recognition to the LGUs which give priority to programs for the less-fortunate people.

The 2010 National Literacy Awards is a project of the Literacy Coordinating Council and the Department of Education, in support of the National Government\'s commitment to achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of reducing adult illiteracy by half in 2015, and consequently improve the quality of life of the Filipino.

Through the 2010 National Literacy Awards, the National Literacy Council hopes to mobilize all sectors of society, government agencies, non-government organizations, local government units and the entire society to promote and disseminate the importance of literacy to national progress and consequently inspire them to develop, implement and sustain literacy programs and projects throughout the country.
