The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park pilot site of UNDP project

Puerto Princesa City (16 February) -- The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP) has been chosen as the pilot project area of Strengthening Coordination for Effective Environmental Management (STREEM) project in the Philippines.
The three-year STREEM project is funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for US$475,000. The project aims to generate global and environmental benefits to improve coordination in the implementation of environmental agreements, biodiversity, climate change and land degradation. It is hoped that through STREEM there will be a smooth inter-agency coordination among the partners involved in dealing with the environmental problems tackled in United Nations conventions.
The city was chosen as the pilot project area because of the high level of commitment and a track record of good governance in the management of its natural resources.
The success of this project will serve as the benchmark and model in the furtherance of STREEM's implementation in other parts of the country and in other developing countries.
The other partners of the project are the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Environmental Management Bureau, National Economic Development Authority and the city government of Puerto Princesa.
Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park together with the Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park are two World Heritage Sites located in the province. PPSNRP is also the country's pride and only entry in the worldwide search for the New7Wonders of Nature. (PIA)
