For the seventh straight year, Puerto Princesa City, the country’s sports tourism capital plays host to the Philippine leg of the FIM Asian Motocross Championship Series dubbed the “Mayor Edward Hagedorn Cup” which unfolds at the city’s world-class motocross racetrack on February 21.
The annual event is a collaboration of NAMSSA, the national sporting authority for motorcycle sports in the Philippines, the City of Puerto Princesa, the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Oakley Philippines, the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Monark Equipment.
Each year, the event draws an estimated 50,000 spectators to the site on raceday making it the country’s premier spectator motorsport event. The event brings together the national motocross champions from Japan, Indonesia, India, Thailand, China, Mongolia, Guam, Iran, Korea, UAE, and the Philippines to contest the bragging rights for motocross supremacy in the Asian continent. The winner in the centerpiece Asian 125 category will bring home the Mayor Edward Hagedorn Cup, a handsome sterling silver token from the city mayor and his constituents.
Mayor Hagedorn s once again extending his full support for the endeavor with hopes of surpassing the success and spectator interest the event garnered in the earlier years. The international riders and their supporters will be treated to a tour of the city’s most popular destinations such as the Crocodile Farm, the pristine beaches in Honda Bay and the St. Paul Subterranean River, which is considred as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Asia.
2009 Philippine Motocross Rider of the Year Kenneth San Andres heads the banner cast of young local riders competing in the premier 125cc category this years. Riders from various parts of the country are also expected to join the fray in their quest for individual glory and the trophies and big cash prizes up for grabs in the 3rd round of NAMSSA’s national motocross series. The series is further expected to garner interest from new riders and stakeholders with the new strategic direction being provided by the NAMSSA Adviser Jack Enrile, the Hon. Representative from Cagayan and newly elected FIM Asia President Stephan “Macky” Carapiet. Carapiet, in his capacity as jury president will oversee the event’s proceedings together with international jury members Aldo Yung from Hongkong Automobile Association (HKAA) and Francis Greg Perez of Guam Motorcycle and ATV Corporation (GMAC).
